170 respondents were drawn with the following population characteristics:
5. 79% of respondents, speaking from their own experience, would recommend starting a business as a good career move
8. "Fraud is a significant risk and many small businesses don't even consider it." 41% of respondents feel that they have appropriate risk management procedures in place . while 35% are neutral about it. 24% either have little or no appropriate risk management procedures against potential fraud. .
9. There are several well known theories on what motivates staff. This question allowed multiple responses and received 766 in total - an average of 4 ½ per respondent. The top scoring factor was salary, but this was followed by interest in the job and working conditions. Job security came 4th and private medical insurance was lowest in popularity. .
10. At the time of asking this question, it seemed that we were likely to be having a typical British summer. The vast majority of responses were submitted before the extreme heatwave of early August 2003. Under normal summer conditions therefore, 18% believe that productivity increases either significantly highly or highly, but 46% believe it is lower and 5% significantly lower. .
11. Junk email and spamming are becoming more significant to many individuals and businesses. 50% of our respondents are not at all discouraged from using email, but the remainder were spread on the degree of discouragement they feel. The same question in the Business Advisers Barometer survey produced a figure of 58% that were not discouraged at all from use of email, again with a spread of the remainder over different levels of discouragement. .
Although smaller businesses are likely in general to have less resilience to cope with extending payment dates, our survey revealed that 11% entertain requests for extensions either frequently or fairly frequently, and only 34% do not entertain such requests at all.
